Favourite Makeup of 2013...

I'm constantly searching for the perfect wardrobe uniform, 5-minute face, capsule everything.  It explains my obsession with white button-downs and double-duty products.  In the last half of 2013, I managed to nail down a 10 minute routine. Let's go.  For 2014, we'll aim for five minutes.

On days I absolutely need my makeup to last, I'll start by smoothing on a layer of Clarins Beauty Flash Balm.  It bullet-proofs my makeup better than anything else.  Next, I'll squeeze out a pump of Koh Gen Doh Aqua Foundation in OC-2 -- on days I'm particularly pale, I'll throw in a pump of Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation in 53 and a dot of Yaby Wasabi Corrector. Is there anything like colour-matching to get a girl going?

Nothing much has changed in my face concealer department -- I'm still mixing Cle de Peau Concealer in Ochre and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in SC-3.  Under the eyes though, I've boarded the Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer bandwagon.  The clincher?  I use Fair/Light, so I'm not sure what people paler than me are supposed to use.

I started off 2013 thinking I knew how to contour.  Then I came across Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Medium -- it changed my life, my cheekbones and my eye sockets.

On days that I need a little glow, I use Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone on the high points of my face and Soleil tan de Chanel around the perimeter.  Try this if you've ever been a victim of fluorescent lighting.  As for blush, check out my 2014 beauty resolutions to see what I hope to rock this year.

On the lips I've been switching back and forth from natural with Make Up For Ever Rouge Natural #9 to ubervamp with Tom Ford Black Orchid Lip Colour.  I'm also very partial to layering either one underneath my blush of the day.

And eyes -- I'm still faithful to Prestige My Blackest Lashes, layered with whatever's handy.  Sometimes I'll line with a black eye shadow, but I'll usually just deepen my socket with my beloved Dior Impressions Cuir.

That's all folks!

Except for skincare of 2013.

And brushes of 2013.

  1. Great picks, girly! I recently fell for CdP Ochre as well. It works for everything else but my undereye area, so I'm still looking around a little. I managed to dig out a small pot of Benefit Erase Paste from my stash, and so far it's been good though not perfect ;) So intrigued by Kevyn Aucoin!

    1. I agree, it's not exactly the right colour for my undereye area. You need to try Eve Pearl! I've heard great things about Erase Paste though, it's supposed to be super brightening!

  2. Great choices Jen! It's the second time in a week someone has told me they like the Clarins Flash Balm - I might have to give it a shot! Oh and where do you get the Prestige Mascara? I've heard good things about it, but thought it was a UK product?

    1. It. is. SO GOOD. I love it more than the Hourglass one, the Benefit Porefessional and Smashbox Primer. It feels like a moisturizer going on but it really helps lock everything in.
I think Prestige mascara has been discontinued, but I bought about ten tubes while they were on clearance. You can still order online though! LMK if you can't find it

    1. I was so lucky to find one! The KA Sculpting powder would be great on you -- you're using Notorious atm right? This is a little browner.

  4. Ooooh, Black Orchid is calling my name! What a great list of favourites...that Clarins Balm is on my must-buy mental shopping list, and has been for a while now...it looks fabulous, and I am reminded of that every time I see it on a blog favourites list!

    1. Black Orchid is to die for! You need to try it! Also, I recently saw the Clarins Beauty Flash Balm at Costco, like, two of them for $30 or something insane like that. Go check it out!

  5. LOVE. EVERYTHING. I need to pull out my Black Orchid. Although, I can't wear it full on anymore. But it's even pretty blotted down I think!

    1. I love Black Orchid, even patted down it makes such a difference! I love using it on my cheeks, it's one of those colours that immediately brightens my face; I think it even makes my eyeballs look whiter!

  6. How is the Wasabi corrector, in term of color payoff? Do you only need a drop? I use the green one from Coastal Scent and everyone keep ask me about it but it was discontinued, these green correctors are hard to find. They have cream stuff, but you can't really mix it with your foundation. It would be nice to have something to suggest to my readers!

    1. It's SO pigmented, I can't even believe it. I might do a video soon of me mixing my foundation colour, but I literally use a drop in 2 pumps of foundation. Of course, it depends on how olive/green you want your colour to be, but for me that's nough!

I've also used MUFE Aquarelle in #6 Apple Green, that is also great! It's less pastel and more pigmented than the Yaby, so it's all personal preference. I wouldn't choose one over the other, except that YABY is slightly more travel-friendly since it's a tube.

      Hope that helps!

    2. Yes it does, thank you! I used to mix MAC True Chartreuse (not Chartreuse, which is shimmery) pigment in my foundation, but powders aren't the best because they can change the texture. It's a shame that the Coastal Scent has been discontinued.

  7. I love Clarins Beauty Flash Balm & Eve Pearl's Salmon Concealer too! Haven't tried anything by Tom Ford yet but that lipstick looks to die for. Where did you buy the Kevyn Aucoin powder?

    1. I got it from Strawberrynet -- PIR cosmetics in Yorkville also sells it, it's about the same price.

  8. Hmmm so if the KA works for you, it should work for me right??? :) Also, fyi the new kgd aqua foundation has a shade between OC1 and OC2 - the new shade is 123! I'm gonna have to try it. I have the LM concealer too and I definitely need to use it more. I'm kinda lazy about making my face perfect. Kinda lazy about makeup in general though lol

    1. Oh yes, it'll definitely work on you! We're about the same colour I think -- OC-2 is slightly dark for me right now, but it matches my body really well, which is darker than the rest of me. Let me know how the formula is -- I really love the current formula!
