Every once in a while, I'll come across an interview, a video or an article that'll offer one sweeping declaration. Rim your waterline with a white liner to open up your eyes! Use a dark pencil to line your lips, they'll look fuller! Don't put mascara on the bottom lashes. Do put mascara on the bottom lashes, but only on every third day. What?? I say, do what's right for you -- try, judge, alter and decide.
Clean up nail polish with a remover-soaked Q-Tip/angle brush/miniscule paint brush. I do this when I have to, but otherwise I'd rather just wait until my shower. The steam from the shower completely lifts any product, whereas the remover sometimes just smudges the pigment around and stains my cuticles. Also, in the time it takes you to detail all 20 of your fingers and toes, you may as well do an in-shower hair mask. Two birds, one shower.
Highlight your brow bone. The only people who should do this are people whose brows actually need a lift or are closer to their eyes than they'd like. My brows are already pretty arched and really, really far from my actual eyes. Whenever I put a highlighter on, they just look like they're trying to run from my lids. Not to mention that after I tweeze the area beneath my brows, they're a little paler from the lack of sun exposure anyway. Instead, I highlight on top of my brow bone for super-clean brows.
Smile to find the apples of your cheeks. I don't put blush on the apples of my cheeks. My face lies somewhere between round and square, so when I smile and put blush on, my cheeks look jowly. Instead, I feel for my cheekbone and put the blush directly on top of the cheek to give my face a little lift. Also, for those of you who want that Kim Kardashian uber-cheek look, you can bet she doesn't smile before she puts on blush.
Curl hair away from your face. Every hair curling tutorial on Youtube be like, "You have to, always, every single time, curl away from your face," as though if you turn the barrel of your curling iron the wrong way, you'll be tackled by a finger-waved vigilante. I do curl away from my face, but I strategically place inward curls around my jawline because it's more flattering for my face shape. Also, hair that's curled all the same way has a tendency to combine into one giant curl on either side of your head.
What don't you do?
this is very interesting!
ReplyDeletei wholeheartedly agree with you that not all beauty tricks work for us. there is no beauty bibles, in my opinion.
i am planning to do a simple eye makeup tutorial with a similar subject, mostly about how the conventional way doesn't work for asian eyes..
i don't highlight my browbones, either. ;)
I've been thinking about that for a while -- it's just that I have a hard time doing tutorials on myself =) if I ever figure it out I'll probably think about it.
DeleteI wish I had your tips!! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't follow any of these either SHH!
I won't tell! :P
DeleteI always curl away from the face :)
ReplyDeleteI sometimes do :P when I feel like changing it up haha!
DeleteI don't line my lips full stop I just apply the lipstick straight on and it looks fine lol. Great post hun, I am now following you, please check out my blog and follow back if you'd like :) x

Me neither! Welcome to the team :) checking your blog out as we speak!
DeleteI agree w/you about the highlighting of the eyebrows. My eyebrows are SO far away from my eyes! Like a mile away :p
ReplyDeleteI once photoshopped my brow so it'd be a little closer, and I couldn't decide if I liked it or not.
DeleteGood one.
ReplyDeleteI am one of those who do need to highlight my brow bones though. haha.
One thing that doesn't works for me is the tip on not lining the entire eye. For me, lining the entire eye actually makes my eyes super large! Really weird, but yeah. haha.
I line all the way on top, but not on the bottom. I look kind of angry when I line all the way along the bottom LOL
DeleteHey...I luv your tips and You are sooo rite! I noticed that when I do things like highlight my brow bone "bcuz they said so" I just end up looking like a drag queen lol...one thing I have so much trouble with is over tweezing.. to the point where I have no brows...drawing them back on so that they're symmetrical is so hard for me... Getting the right shape and also how far away they should be from my actual eye..does the distance from the eye to brow really matter as long as it looks good? Sorry for the long post lol
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I never try to make sure my brows are fully symmetrical -- it'll never happen! I try to make sure they stay within the same category of brow -- that is, if I'm doing one really arched brow, I'll try to make the other one arched as well. If you notice though, my left brow is always a little more rounded than the right, due to the way my hair grows and my natural bone structure.
DeleteFor me, the distance from the eye to the brow just has to do with balance -- a brow that's really far away from your eye can give you that "surprised" look, regardless of brow shape. On the flipside, a brow that's too close to the eye can leave some people looking slightly neanderthal-ish. But you're totally right -- first and foremost, the right shape is the most important thing.
Good luck! I plan to do a brow tutorial at some point, just have to figure out how to film it first.
Whoa, this went way longer than I meant it to!
Heeeey this makes a lot of sense (as usual)! I normally can't be bothered to highlight my Cupid's Bow, though I do that when I can because mine isn't as distinct as I'd like it to be. I also wait till I'm in the shower for the nail polish that got onto the wrong place to just fall off on its own. My hands really aren't steady enough to clean it up without ruining my fresh manicure! I do highlight my brow bones because of my brows aren't all that arched, but I can definitely see your point. I actually put my blush on my cheekbones after watching the Wayne Goss tutorial. He's right about that one!
ReplyDeleteOmg that Wayne gods tutorial is my favourite of his.
DeleteSameeee here!but hey not every tip is for everyone, well most tips are really personalized sometimes hahaha c:

For sure! I find a lot of gurus tend to give advice that really only works for them, and it's because they just don't understand other people's faces and don't realize it
DeleteMy hair stylist always told me to curl every other section the opposite way (first set in, second bit out, etc.) and I know nothing about hair, but this always seemed to look good. But I think in the end it is definitely about what suits your face, and no one knows better than you, right?
ReplyDeleteWell said! I agree that it looks way more natural when you alternate the curl
DeleteI could probably highlight both above and on my brow bone since my eyebrows have no arch at all :P Still looks like it needs an arch lol.
ReplyDeleteI love your brow shape! They're like Cara brows!
DeleteThe last one is such a cool tip! Not sure if we have the same face shape but I kinda want to try this!
ReplyDeleteWayne Goss posted a video about how when you smile to apply blush and then relax your face again, the area where your applied the blush "drops" so it's not really where blush is supposed to be. I've always eyeballed it or sucked my cheeks in for blush so learning that was oddly validating.
Yessss that video is my all time favourite from him! It changed my face forever
DeleteI do the cupid's bow highlighter trick when I have extra time on my hands, I feel like it makes the edges more defined. I completely agree, makeup depends a lot of your eye and face shape, it takes time to find what really works for you though. :)
ReplyDeleteIt really does, but it's definitely worth the effort :-)
DeleteI always wait for a shower to lift the excess polish off. It works like a charm!
ReplyDeleteHahaha I always do 1-4! When I try to clean up my nail polish anyway, I make an even bigger mess.
