Review: NARS Orgasm vs TheBalm HotMama

Hot Mama, Orgasm

One of my all-time favourite blushes is The Balm's Hot Mama -- the first time I put this on, I remember my eyes widened at the perfectly peachy-pink flush that graced my cheek.  I tilted my head from side to side and watched as the sunlight hit my cheekbone and reflected its finely-milled shimmer.  This is one of those blushes that works in the summer and the winter -- it's not too dewy for the summer when my skin makes its own glow, and not too bright for the winter when even my ever-tanned skin starts looking a little sallow.  I'm pretty sure I wore this blush every day for two weeks straight.  If you know how I am about anything, you'll understand how much I have to love something to show it that sort of commitment.

NARS Orgasm is a cult favourite -- you'd be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't played with this or featured it at some point.  Since Hot Mama is supposed to be a dupe and I'm constantly on the search for something better (product ADD!), I leaped at the chance to get this when it came in this year's Sephora Super Stars kit.  This is another peachy-pink shimmer with gold shimmer throughout.

I apply both with a NARS Yachiyo and I have to say, I prefer Orgasm's dupe, Hot Mama.  The colour is slightly peachier and the shimmer is more subtle.  It's not that they're so different that you need both, but I would thoroughly sample both before buying.  While Hot Mama gives me that my-cheek-but-better look, Orgasm pulls a bit red on me, making me look more ruddy than flushed. There's a very creamy quality to the colour of Orgasm, like it has more white pigment in it.  If you're a little less olive than me and you don't mind the difference in glitter size, NARS Orgasm is a pretty safe bet.  I can completely understand why this is a cult favourite, but it just doesn't work as well on me as Hot Mama does.  Now that I have both, I tend to use NARS Orgasm in the evening when I know there'll be softer lighting that will diffuse both the redness and the glitter.

TheBalm is available at Rexall -- Hot Mama retails for $26 CAD for 0.25 oz
Orgasm is available at NARS counters and Sephora -- $32 CAD for 0.16 oz

Have you tried either of these?  Which do you like?

  1. I love Hot Mama, but I feel like I'm one of the few people that doesn't like Orgasm. It just doesn't flatter my skin tone and makes me look ruddy.

  2. I own both. Hot Mama is a million times better. Despite their similar shades, Orgasm barely shows up on me.

    1. I know what you mean, it sort of disappears into mine too, as though I've just rubbed my cheek and left mark. Yay for Hot Mama!

  3. I totally regret not buying when Rexall had their 50% off face products >_< Cause I do agree with your on the Orgasm, just didn't really suit me very well, despite being widely loved.
I will make sure I get this if I do see their sale again...hopefully they have another one *fingers crossed*

  6. I actually haven't tried any of these! I have swatched Orgasm, but I just wasn't sure at all about the shimmer so I didn't get it. I haven't seen Hot Mama in real life at all, and at this point I have enough peachy blushes already!

    1. I hate when I get to that point where I have "enough" of something. I'm an excellent rationalizer though, so I usually get by LOL!

  7. I have been wanting to try theBalm for a while, so maybe I'll give this blush a go! I'm on the "hates Nars Orgasm" side of the fence. It was just WAY too shimmery for me and I always wished it were peachier. Hot Mama sounds like exactly what I was looking for!

  8. Wow they look similar! Actually I have seen few dupes of Nars Orgasm but skipped buying the dupe as I already have Nars Orgasm. I love Nars Orgasm as it provides a glowy look for my all day long :)

  9. while I've never owned Orgasm I get enjoyment out of finding a good dupe recomendation- thats weird huh? Like I'm fighting against Nars Orgasm anarchy!!But the glitter factor always puts me off Orgasm but I do love the colour, need to try me something from The Balm....

    1. I'm as obsessed with finding dupes as I am with trying to prove that they are, in fact, better than the original cult favourite. Check this one out!

  10. I have tried Orgasm and like others have mentioned, found it to be too shimmery. I did really like the pretty colour though, so I may have to check out Hot Mama.

    1. It takes a certain skin colour to wear Orgasm, despite its claims about being for every skin colour.

  14. Many years ago I used to wear Orgasm a lot and it was one of my favorite blushes! Then last year I tried it again and hated it. It brought out all my redness and just looked splotchy and the color simply looked wrong. I've read a few places that the mini Orgasms that they've been putting in sets lately is a little different, so maybe at some point I'll look for one of those to try.
