Laura Mercier Portfolio for Home and Away

Pardon the photo overload -- can you tell I'm excited?  This is the Laura Mercier Portfolio for Home and Away that I showed in my last weekend update.  If there is one thing I love more than makeup, it is makeup storage itself.  I first saw this in a Wayne Goss video where he told me it was limited edition and I got so sad because I didn't think I'd ever see it again.  Cut to a week and a half ago when I came across it at Holt Refnrew and nearly shrieked.

This is a travel makeup case measuring 11.5 in x 9 in.  The hard outer shell unzips all the way around to reveal two magnetic covers.  On the first "page" there are two pouches of the same size that stick to the front cover.  With all of these mesh pouches, you can pull them out and use them as makeup bags alone.  The two on the back cover are different sizes -- one looks like it would be TSA compliant, and the other is a skinnier pouch suitable for pencil products.  The entire case is made of plastic which makes it really easy to wipe down with a baby wipe before and after each use.

The middle flap has seven slots for brushes, and here is where my first criticism arises.  There are two slots wide enough for standard face brushes (here I've shown the Cover FX Foundation Brush #160 and the Smashbox Blush Brush #16) but the eye slots are extremely snug.  I tried to fit a MAC 227 in one of them, and there was no way it was happening.  On the back of this flap, there is an elasticized compartment that could hold more brushes, but they might move around given that there's no protective dust cover or stitching to separate it into compartments.

The case also comes with two empty Laura Mercier palettes -- a six-pan and a three-pan.  I've never tried a Laura Mercier colour in my life, but these would be helpful if you'd already amassed a collection.  The mirrors inside these are large and take up the entire lid of the palette.  I've shown them here with a couple of my travel essentials.

Good makeup storage makes me want to make better use of my makeup.  I've never found something I liked for travelling -- if it had a hard shell, there weren't enough compartments and my products would knock into each other.  If it was a soft case, it wasn't protected from my other belongings in my carry-on.  Here, I'm not concerned that any of my products will explode and get all over my clothes, I don't think any of my glass bottles will break or even that my brushes will be crushed.  I'm officially a happy camper.

How do you pack your makeup for travel?

    1. For sure, I'm excited to use it! It used to come in a croc print I think, but I like this version more.

  2. This is great! PS - saw your Batiste dry shampoo in the background -- that is my absolute favorite!

  4. Ooo I love it when there exists great storage ideas! I usually put all my make up for travel in a large makeup bag and pray nothing happens to it in transit! I did, however, purchase a Unii palette with the intent of depotting my commonly used makeup items but haven't had the heart to do it. Hence, 2 empty Unii palettes, brand new and still sitting in my drawer from last year. Oops.

    1. I haven't tried Unii yet! Where did you get them from? They're a little smaller than Z-palettes, right?

    2. I had a friend in the US order them for me and brought them back when she visited. I actually have no idea how their size compares to Z-palettes.

  5. I REALLY need to check this out!!! Though I guess my 1 concern would be fitting a foundation bottle in there? I know I could decant but for foundation I don't like to do that. Hmmm... Think I would zip the brush compartment out...it seems like not enough space and like it might squish the brushes? Anyway, I did find exactly what I've been looking for to travel with my brushes. It's kind of big but it's got plenty of room and most importantly, brushes are very easy to see and don't get squished!! But I still want to check this out, I am a sucker for anything travel related, as exhibited by my carry-on luggage collection! LOL :-)

    1. I haven't had a problem fitting in my MUFE HD foundation. For the brushes, they don't really squish since there's a protective flap, but I like to carry more face brushes than anything when I travel. How do you travel with brushes??? I'm so curious now!

Carry-on luggage is my secret vacation weakness.

    2. Oh, ok that's good to know foundation bottles fit!! I'm like you...I carry more brushes than cases like this can usually hold. I like that you can store other stuff in the back of the brushes, but like you mentioned if I put more brushes in there I don't like that it doesn't have a protective flap...and surely then my brushes would get smushed!! I found this awesome brush holder from MUFE. It's bigger in diameter than other ones I've seen similar to it from Sigma and other companies (lighter weight too). I did order one from Sigma but it was so small that after only putting in a few brushes I couldn't close the lid w/o it hitting the brush hair. Anyway, here's a link:

I'll be doing a post about it soon so you'll be able to see some real life pics!!

    3. I feel like brushes are the things I miss most on vacations. I'm okay without as much product, but I really do miss the application process! Thanks for the link! Can't wait for your post on it -- storage posts are my absolute vice!

  6. Gosh that is the perfect travel storage, I love make-up storage. I always end up taking separate makeup cases for brushes and make-up as can never find something suitable!

  7. Hello are using Wordpress for your blog platform? I'm new to the blog world but I'm trying to get started and create my
own. Do you need any coding expertise to make your own blog?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  8. Oh wow, lucky you for managing to lay your hands on this! As someone who has a bit of an OCD tendency, I can definitely see the attraction of this one!

I travel with my makeup in a case. It's made of fabrics, but rigid enough to offer some protection. As for brushes, I have a bdellium travel brush roll and I pack them separately in that one!

  10. You're a great organizer!!! I bring eyeshadow palettes, mostly neutrals that go from light to deep colors, 2 lipsticks one red and one my lip but better, pencil eyeliner, mascara, foundation in small pot, concealer, 1 universal blush like Chanel Rose Initial. I skip brown powder and use a taupe eyeshadow in the eyeshadow palette in stead. Then I pour skin care products into small pots. I use makeup wipes too. But well, my stuff is no where near being organized :D I usually pack 2 bags, one for makeup and skincare, the other for hair and feminine stuff. Sounds like I need something like this.

    1. Thank you! I try to pretend I am =P You sound like you pack exactly the same way as me, which is awesome! I think your travel essentials would fit incredibly well into the portfolio.

  11. I love makeup storage too. I wish more brands came out with cases like this. I actually have a similar one (but it's vinyl and floral print) that I got in the UK years ago.

  12. You are very well organized! My must have for travel makeup bag is my UD Naked palette! Other than that I'll pick one eyeliner, two shades of blush, a bronzer :) I'll get two lipstick shades too so that I can switch lip shades when I am bored ;) Not to forget, my MAC 217 and TF blush brush. Those two brushes are essentials for me :)
