Review: Nip + Fab Concealer vs YSL Touche Eclat

Nip + Fab is your drugstore Rodial fix, and I'm testing the Eye Fix Brightening Concealer against YSL's Touche Eclat. Here in Canada YSL TE retails for almost $60 CAD including tax, so I'm comfortable investing $11.95 in my quest for a cheaper alternative.

First impression: Right away, the $40 disparity shows itself in the texture. Nip + Fab's version isn't quite as creamy; even blended out you can tell the texture finish is grittier than TE.

Colour: I could only find one colour option. I think TE has up to six or seven now, which is pretty exciting! NF's version would suit anyone up to about NW25 I think...it leans really, really pink.  In this review I'm using YSL's #2.

Again, with all drugstore products - great product for the price. In fact, I'd say N+F's product is better than what I paid - for that kind of light-reflecting property, I think I would have paid up to $16. YSL's is still better - at least you know you're getting your money's worth! Is it $40 better? For a product like concealer, I think so. Foundation, concealer, serums - these are products that are worth the splurge. However, Nip + Fab's option is a great way to tide you over if you should ever run out of Touche Eclat.

Top: N+F
Bottom: TE
Left: Unblended
Right: Blended in
As mentioned above, the N+F is much pinker than the TE-- even more so in real life than in this photo.  Great for some people, but if you have extremely yellow/dark skin, it won't work.

Left: N+F Right: YSL

N+F actually looks a lot better in this photo than TE does, but in real life the finish is much smoother. Pardon the lack of brows.

A little weekend something...

I think I might be a masochist.

Last year, I was on this carb-less diet for about three weeks, and when I say carb-less, I mean fewer than 20 grams.  In other words, I couldn't even eat fruits or vegetables - I subsisted on cheese, meat and eggs for 25 days.

During that three-week stretch is when I discovered food blogs.  Now I don't know why I did this, but I kept torturing myself with the internet.  I went to the Ben and Jerry's site to look up all the ingredients in every single flavour; I became a regular Food Wishes and Hungry Mouse reader; and I couldn't stop looking at thisiswhyyourefat.com.

It was terrible.

And I'm doing the same thing again.

I've just spent an hour perusing the Nasty Gal site for clothes that I will not let myself purchase.  I won't. Iwon'tIwon'tIwon't.

Aaahhh but they're SO PRETTY.

Show you mine if you show me yours?  I've pulled a few from the wishlist into a set here, but click on the link to see my complete lemming list!

Illamasqua: Muse

My brother lives lived in Ireland and I went to visit him a couple summers ago.  He lived in Cork, a gorgeous city in the south and I didn't really haul anything from there.  A few days in, we took a trip to Dublin and it was in a department store there that I found the emerging brand Illamasqua!

All Lacquered Up had just featured the brand on her site - they were just breaking into the North American market.  I had really given up bringing home any purchases to show for my trip when I came across a counter in Henry St.

It was the summer of 2009 when they came out with two limited edition nail polishes, one of which I picked up.  Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the loveliest of blue-greens: Illamasqua Muse.

It's gorgeous beyond words - the way I picture water just before I land at a resort
I remember applying this immediately (application: smooth and flowy!) when we got back to our hotel room and then annoying my brother to no end with regular questions like:

"Isn't it pretty?"
"Look at it in natural light!"
"Now in the shade!"
"OMG it's even beautiful in fluorescent light!"

On and on we went until he popped a sleeping pill to drown me out.

OOTD You're a tiger, baby!

This is going to be one of those possibly annoying posts where none of these items are currently available.  Fitting, since I'm trying not to purchase anything and I think I'm going to include clothing.  Less strictly so, but it'll be an interesting challenge.

What, green eyes aren't good enough?

I'm doing a look with the Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips - Brown Eyes.  Except, TOD has green eyes and I only bought the brown one.  But guess what?  I'm using it anyway.  There ain't nothin' no one can say to stop me.

Physicians FormulaShimmer Eye Shadow - Brown

The texture of the shadows isn't amazing; with some colours, I had to really work my brush in.  I wouldn't use this if you're looking for extremely pigmented colour.  This is for people who want that 'slightly done' look - this would be great for younger girls or people just starting with make up.

How I got this look:
  1. Smooth GOSH Velvet Touch Eye Primer all over the lid and underneath the lash line.
  2. Take the second colour (midtone lilac) from the top and use a flat brush/finger/anything to pack the colour onto the centre of your lid, blending out slightly to either side.
  3. Flip the brush over, and pick up the fifth colour from the top (fuschia).  Apply to the inner third of the eyelid.
  4. Take the last colour (dark, dusty purple) and apply to the outer third and crease, using a MAC 217 or the edge of your paddle brush.  Wrap the colour around your eye, edging on the outer lower lashline.
  5. Dust off the brush and pick up the first colour in the palette (shimmery white) and apply to your brow bone.  Take this opportunity to reshape the colour you've applied to your lids.  Also tap some of the colour on the inner corner and the lower lashline.
  6. Finish with one coat of mascara (L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes)
  7. On cheeks, I dusted MAC Overdyed high on the cheekbone to give a slight contour.
  8. On lips, I used Liplicious in Sparkling Plum on the centre of her lips and blended outwards.
Happy Wednesday!

First in a line of 10

I've finished my first Project X Pan item!  Introducing...

It took me about a year to finish this up, but I quite like it.  I started buying these right around the time everyone kept coming out with dry-touch sunscreens aka the time I finally started wearing sunscreen regularly.  I don't usually burn so I never had incentive to protect myself, but now that it's less sticky/gross than before, I'm willing to fight any oncoming wrinkles.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, SPF 55, 3 Ounces (Pack of 2)
This is it in its unopened glory

One down, nine to go!

TOD: ootd?
Procrastinator: um...OUTFIT OF THE DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY (à la Oprah)!

In honour of the first WARM Saturday here in Toronto, I'm doing my first ever outfit of the day!  I couldn't do these before because it would have been weird given the circumstances, but now that I've made myself known it's like I can do anything!

Including...a bright floral that's a lot shorter than I remember...

I don't usually wear florals, but this summer they've been creeping into my wardrobe.

Dress: Zara
Shoes: Anne Klein
Bangle: somewhere in Rome
Hoops: Agatha Jewelry

I entered a giveaway!

In fact, two - from two lovely Aussie girls!

First, the lovely Jaci  Walker is giving away an F80 brush from Sigma - I've been lemming this brush for a while, so wish me luck!  Enter it here!

Next, Me My Best & I just reached 50 subscribers and is giving away a make up bag full of goodies here as a thank you!

$OPI: 212 Sexy

I never wear black polish.  TOD does sometimes, but I never do.  The reason?  It always looks really brown on my dark skin.  Despite different layering techniques, colour combinations, I can never get that gorgeous true black.  If any of you have seen that indie film Suburban Girl with Sarah Michelle Gellar, you'll know what I mean.  I strive for exactly those nails.

I'm much better off with a blackened colour - OPI's Lincoln Park After Dark, Chanel Blue Satin, NARS Zulu (I'm still hoping...one day) and the like.

That said, two years ago I saw the most perfect black.  It is not a creme, it is not supremely glossy and it looks brown.  Ladies and gentlmen, I present to you, $OPI 212 Sexy.

It is the most perfect colour - a brown-based black laced through with multicoloured microglitter, copper flakes strewn about like dying embers.  At a glance it is the perfect, pebbly balance between  chocolate, bronze and copper, leaving people wondering exactly what colour you're wearing. The first time I saw it, I knew I had to have it.

Has anyone else signed up for this?  It's Jewelmint, but instead of jewelry, it's limited edition t-shirts, and instead of Kate Bosworth, it's the Olsen twins!

I wasn't all that impressed by JewelMint, but I'm really excited about StyleMint!  I'm really bad at putting jewelry on, but I don't usually leave the house without a top on.  Anyone who wants to can check it out here!  Who's ready to judge the Olsen twins' ability to design for $30??

Review: Urban Decay Naked vs Too Faced Natural Eye Palette

I've been playing with the UD Naked palette for a few days now and if you recall, my first impression was pretty good!  I debated for a long time between this and the Too Faced palette (a decision made for me by the shortage of UD Nakeds), and I figure now that I have both it's time for an opinion.

Let's break it down

I kissed a girl and I liked it...

The taste of her cherry...

Chapstick Lip Balm Spf 4, Cherry - 0.15 Oz

I've never actually tried the cherry version!  I've decided I like it.  It smells like red Freezies!  I don't actually taste anything, but it's delightfully soft and not at all waxy.  I've been using the EOS smooth sphere, but I think I like this better.  EOS leaves me feeling flaky, but I can't get over the spherical novelty.

Is this better than my Philosophy Kiss Me?  It's different.  That's a liquid emollient, so it really feels like it's absorbing into your lips and leaving just moisturized lip behind.  This, on the other hand, leaves a little residue like there's a physical barrier between your lips and the rest of the world.  They smell kind of similar though!  I think it comes down to personal preference.  It's easier to share the Philosophy Kiss Me because people just squeeze it out of the tube, as opposed to wiping down your Chapstick every time.

Are you guys squeamish about sharing things?  I used to have a die-hard no-mascara-sharing rule, which was actually already a relaxation on my no-sharing-anything rule, but TOD and I actually share mascara now.  I try to keep separate ones for her, but they all end up getting mixed up anyway.  I just tend to throw any I've used on her out after she claims I've given her some sort of eye infection.

But yes, it's the first day of summer school for me, and I like having new things for school.  This will be my new-ish lip balm that I swear to use until it's EMPTY.  I resolve it, it shall be so.

Nails Inc: Belgrave Place

Hi lovelies!  So one way I thought I'd circumvent this Project X Pan thing would be to show you my polish collection!  There have been a few photos of it here and there, but I've purchased some things since then so I figured I'd run through them one by one!

Pardon the blur, I was trying to get the colour right!

This is a recent purchase that I never got around to trying.  It's a Nails Inc colour which I've heard of before, but had never personally encountered.  I picked this up during a random Urban Outfitters wander and it looks exactly like this old Bourjois colour I came across in Dublin that thickened up to the point where it came out in chunks, not liquid.  That'll teach me to buy anything quick-drying again.

I think this may be my summer colour!  It's not bright, exactly, but there's definitely an element of oohi, might this glow in the dark?  I don't know!

May I also just say that this applied beautifully?  No streaks, the formula was so even and pigmented and the polish just smoothed across my nail in the most unfussy manner.  The photo above is...ONE coat!  I just applied one thick coat and I was like, ...I don't even want a second one!  I don't know that I want a top coat either! Drying time was pretty good, just a few minutes and I felt comfortable enough to move around and start typing this post.

Anyone else tried these before?  They only had this and one other colour, but I'd love to see swatches of any others!

Happy Friday!

And on the 100th Day, There was a Video?

Somebody pinch me.

I, the Procrastinator, stuck with something for more than 100 occurrences.

For those of you who don't know of my intense lack of attention span, this will not be a significant milestone, but let's just say I came close to falling off the wagon a few times here and there.

And to you, loyal reader for whom I write, this is the start of something new.  What, you ask?

Watch this.

Then this.

Project X Pan

You guys, today is my last day of purchasing for...god knows how long.  I have a few things I picked up to tide me over (which I will slowly review and show you), but know that I won't be doing a haul for a while because...I'm on a ban.

This has been floating around the blogosphere for some time now, but I've never done it because I think it'll take me forever.  The idea is that until you finish ten products, you cannot purchase a single item.  I'm a little afraid.

I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to do this - I think most people just list whatever they happen to use up, but I think I'm going to give myself a guide.
  1. Glysomed Hand Cream
  2. Cherry Chapstick - I have never finished a whole lip balm in my life.  This is my chance!
  3. Kiehls Calendula Toner/Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil/Lancome Creme Radiance Cleanser - I'm putting these together as three since they're all less than half-full.  It seems like cheating to pick 10 almost-empties.
  4. MAC Nymphette
  5. Maybelline Gel Liner
  6. Lancome Maquicomplet Concealer
  7. Josie Maran Argan Oil
  8. Korres Wild Rose Foundation - this is going to be a tough one since it's pretty heavy and we're just getting into the summer.  We'll see how this goes...
  9. Boscia Luminizing Mask
  10. Two mascaras - I'm opening two new ones tomorrow, so I'll update which ones they are!
Shall I give myself a deadline?  Say, eight weeks?

I'll be back on July 4th.  See you then!

Wish me luck?

I'll need it.

Order of the Stylish Blogger

I promise to be faithful and loyal to the blogging community and to be guided by the ideals of materialism, beauty and the FTC; to do everything in my power to bring you brutally honest reviews and make-up how-to's; to review products sent by firms, but only those that upon review are worth my own non-existent money.

I will adorn my Stylish Blogger Award with everlasting thanks to Superficial Sanctuary.

So help you god.

Superficial Sanctuary very sweetly put me up for this badge of honour and I can't thank her enough!  But before we get too gushy - some kind of obvious rules!

  • Thank and link back to the person who sent the award
  • Share 7 things about yourself
  • Award recently discovered bloggers
  • Contact these bloggers and tell them about the award

Blogs I'm awarding?  The following:
  1. Me, My Best and I
  2. Collections
  3. Style Bouquet
  4. Secret Diary of a Spendaholic
  5. Face Fixers
  6. Sunshine in Toronto
I'm a sucker for pretty pictures and spitfire writing, both of which all these women have.  Go forth and follow!

7 things?  Not sure that I'm that interesting, but here goes!

  1. I'm about a week away from my 100th post, in which I will share something with you all that I've never shared before.  I'm really nervous/excited and I don't know what kind of reaction to expect so...here's hoping it's good!
  2. I take really, really, really hot showers even though I know it's the worst thing you can do for your skin
  3. Certain things that people say/do just stick with me - for example, after my brother told me that I should let the tap run for a minute before filling my water bottle, I always do it, even though I can't understand why I should.
  4. Last night I ate kangaroo and alligator.
  5. Sometimes when I sit down to write a blog post I think - wouldn't this just be easier to understand if I did it in video form?  But then I realize I don't know how to operate my webcam.
  6. I'm still not sure how I feel about TAGs.  Is that supposed to be capitalized?  Maybe it's just tags?  Oh I don't know.
  7. I'm kind of a messy person, but I'll go through random bouts of cleaning and then get really OCD about keeping things organized, picking up after myself and wiping things down.  Same goes right after this move - I've just gotten everything organized and presentable, and I'm wondering how long the novelty will last before the clutterbeast takes over and deposits all my clothes on the floor.
If you've already been nominated, my apologies!  Consider this a small blogsophere?

Again, this blog award is thanks to Superficial Sanctuary - one of the sweetest, FUNNIEST writers with whom I've ever had the pleasure of connecting.  Keep writing, lady!

Happy Mother's Day to you and your mamas =)

Make it stop...

I'm going to share with you a series of purchases I've committed over the past month or so - somebody please scold me out of purchasing!  My camera's officially out of commission for the next week or so (I'm awful when it comes to not breaking things), hence the lack of personal photos, but I'll share links to where you can potentially purchase these things yourself!  Good enough?  I hope!
Forever 21 Frayed Denim Shorts
Looking back at the summer of 2010, I realized that I own one pair of shorts and I wore them every single day.  This is not unlike that time in my first year of university when I found a pair of $15 Dynamite jeans and wore them every. single. day.  I never thought I'd revisit that time in my life, but here we are!  I tend towards neutrals so I'm trying really hard not to purchase anything that's not a bright.  That said...

Forever 21, Racerback Tank
I don't have enough black tank tops.

I don't.

Leave me alone.

PS: If anyone has a perfect white, v-necked tee rec, I'd love to hear it!

Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Gel CreamLiner, Hazel Eyes 7051 .21 oz (6 g)
Physician's Formula Gel Liner Trio for Brown Eyes

I've been looking to try these for a while, expect a comparison to Maybelline's gel liner soon!  I can't help but notice that brown liner looks so much more natural on me though...black liner obsolete?

MAC Blending brush 217
MAC 217

My issue with this?  I think I want a second one.  I've created a monster.

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil Shadow Liner 601 Black BeanNYX Jumbo Eye Pencil Shadow Liner 604 Milk

I'm probably the last person to find this out, apparently the Rexall pharmacy on Bay and Dundas has a tiny little NYX section.  Who knew??  Rejoice, Torontonians, rejoice!  I had to pick up the Jumbo Eye Pencils in - what else? - Milk and Black Bean to see what all the fuss was about.  I'll let you know in a few days!  These retailed for about $6 IIRC, but they're currently on sale at 25% off, so go get 'em!

Sharpie Permanent Marker Fine Tip 5 Pack

Not that this is really beauty-related, but I'm undergoing a slight Sharpie obsession.  It's my perversion dream to fill an entire Illy can with different sized black Sharpies, so I've just been purchasing them whenever I see them.  I need a doctor.

Nestle Kit Kat Bar 4 Finger (England) (6 Pack)

Wednesday Quickstop

Hey lovelies!

Alright, so I was all sorts of MIA this weekend because...I moved!  I'm so behind on my blogroll - I just got interwebbed today!!  So relieved to reconnect with the outside world!  Now I have no reason to leave my apartment.  I had a post planned for Monday, but totally forgot to release it, and  Superficial Sanctuary beat me to it!  But just to show you my efforts with her first product review, here you go!

Sally Hansen Salon Effects - Girl Flower

Check her review out here!

My thoughts?  Considering that these have lasted through a weekend of packing/moving/furniture building, I'm very comfortable recommending these.  I think application woes (e.g. stretching out the sticker, choosing which size to fit your nail, lifting, etc) will go away with practice, but these are such a great pic for a vacation!  Not to mention they're infinitely cheaper than getting your nails Minx'd.

I'm going to be sorting my apartment out over the next little while, but I definitely have some fun things coming up!  Maybe the famed What's In Your Bag?  I don't know!  Let me know in the comments if you have any requests =)
