My Best Liebsters

So in the past week or so (give or take five days), I've been granted two blog awards!

First Me My Best and I named me one of her Liebsters (I totally love that episode of Friends.  Go here to find out what I mean)!  This Aussie blogger shares her best beauty friends with you and I so look forward to her posts every day.  She recently brought up an amazing charity called FITE that teamed up with Kiva and Dermalogica to encourage female entrepreneurship in developing countries.  All three things I love - skin care, my girls and microfinance!

Then Superficial Sanctuary kept my award-winning glow on by bestowing upon me a Best Blog award.  This is the second time now that she's sent an award my way and I can't thank her enough.  This lady is one of the funniest people you'll meet - she's a beauty blogger but I definitely look forward to her anecdotes more than anything!  A teacher during the year and a nanny during the summer, she'll keep you amused with stories of her charges.  Not to mention she has more or less the exact same beauty taste as me ;-)

A few Blog Award housekeeping rules!

  • Link back to the person who awarded you
  • Share 7 random facts about yourself
  • Award someone else (below)
  • Answer the following:

    1. Favorite Color
    2. Favorite Song
    3. Favorite Dessert
    4. Making You Pissy
    5. When You're Upset, You...
    6. Favorite Pet
    7. Black or White
    8. Biggest Fear
    9. Best Feature
    10. Everyday Attitude
    11. What is "Perfection"
    12. Guilty Pleasure
And of course, only we could spend eight minutes answering 12 relatively simple questions.

I'm not sure exactly how many people I'm allowed to award this, but here's my list!

  1. Me, My Best and I - as I mentioned above, she's the sweetest Irish-Australian I've ever met =) and you definitely want to check her out if you love Top 5 posts as much as I do!
  2. Superficial Sanctuary - again, I've not yet had a chance to give her an award she hasn't give me first, so here's my opportunity!  Go visit her site - tell her I sent you and she'll tell you something funny =P
  3. Living After Midnite - Jacquelyn is an Avon rep who does the most amazing look with Avon cosmetics!  She has such a flair for the dramatic and she's so pretty she doesn't have a single problem pulling off any of her looks.
  4. Style By MJ - Marissa's a fashion intern who definitely deserves her job.  She just posted the most beautiful photos of some pieces from her work which I could not stop drooling over!  Not to mention she just did a "What I Packed" and you all know I can't resist a travel post.
  5. Voguely Van - Her style is so my style.  Or at least, what I want my style to be.  'Nuff said. PS: Her most recent post has a million photos of chocolate in it.  Go.  Go and see.  You'll follow for the rest of your life.
Thank you all again for your support!  It keeps me writing =)

Review: Maybelline Longwear Gel Liner vs Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Gel Liner

It's here.

I've been meaning to do this for...some time now.  I can't remember how long.  That's how long it's been.

Here's a little comparison for you  - not that I like to compare!

Top: Maybelline Gel Liner in Black
Bottom: Physician's Formula Shimmer Strip for Brown Eyes Black Gel Liner
I need to warn you that the Maybelline is a lot older than the Physician's Formula, so it was drier when I applied it.  I do think though that it dried out a little more quickly in general.  I think this might be because the formula is a little thicker; PF's version isn't quite as opaque when I apply it on my lid so I usually put on two coats.  Theirs also has a little purple shimmer in it, which apparently didn't show up in either of these photos.

Smudge test after 15 minutes.  PF wins =P

I can't compare to MAC Fluidline or Bobbi Brown's gel liner because...I haven't tried either of them.  You can flog me.

You know you're procrastinating when...

You take a photo of what's in your top desk drawer.

I try and limit the number of excuses I have to get away from my desk so I've filled mine with lotion, hand sanitizer, lip balm, every conceivable writing tool, blotting papers and lens cleaner.  Occasionally there may or may not be snacks in there but 3 hours into my work day, I've already consumed them.

What do you keep close at hand?

Essie: Lollipop

My first red!  Well, on this blog anyway.  My actual first red was OPI's Big Apple Red, but that's a post for another Friday.

Essie's Lollipop.  What can I say?

Here's a little something about me.  This was more true when I was younger, but it still happens.  You know when you see something really pretty on someone else and try as you might, it doesn't work on you?  It's happened with so many things - butterfly clips, smokey/coloured eye shadow, red lips and ringlets.  Through sheer force of will I've made some of those work for me; last summer I decided I'd make bright red polish work.

I don't have an issue with red nails, but reds on me usually cannot have brick/orange/burnt/poppy/coral in the name.  I do not look good in warm colours - I've accepted it.  Therefore, any reds, whether on my eyes/cheeks/lips/nails/else, must be distincly cool toned.  Hint: anything that says cherry/velvet/berry/scarlet are usually okay.

Enter Lollipop.

This is the closest thing I can find to a light, orange-y summer red that doesn't make my skin look dirty.  However, due to my severe nail chewing, I can't swatch this on myself, so I've brought Lynn along to help me show you.

What happened to the bottle, you ask?  Well, despite my superawesomepackingskills - I forgot to wrap a bottle of Deborah Lippmann's Ruby Red Slippers and it exploded all over my toiletry bag.  I still haven't been able to replace Ruby Red Slippers and continue to mourn it to this day.  One day!

Don't say I didn't warn you...

The following is what happens to you when you fall asleep while I'm talking to you.  You have been duly warned.

For those who are interested...
  • All colours are from my BH 120 Eyeshadow Palette, 1st Edition (swatches here)
  • Left eye (your right): Prepped with Urban Decay Primer Potion and NYX Jumbo Shadestick in Milk
  • Right eye: bare lid
Note:  Just an FYI, and I'm sure you already know this, but work quickly when using a base!  I waited too long to put the green and orange on as an afterthought and I couldn't get the gradient to work properly.  Plan out your looks before you do them!

In True Procrastinating Fashion...

Tod's supposed to be applying to med school and I'm supposed to be studying for a midterm.  This is what happened instead.

It started with an INTENSE brow.
Then I decided I wanted a really deep crease.

And a really spidery lash...

A silly grin...

Then no crease colour....

But I kept the super-high cheekbones.

May I just say, this marks the first time you've ever seen Tod's hair straightened!  We're cutting it soon, so stay tuned!

And I'm going to do this properly when I get a moment, but thank you Me, My Best and I for kindly naming me one of her Liebsters!  So sweet!  Check her out for some awesome reviews!

Back to the books...

First OFFICIAL day of summer!

In honour of what is hopefully months and months of fantastically hot days, here are a few summer things we're currently in love with.  This was filmed some time ago, but here's hoping it's still relevant!

Let me know if you want that recipe!

Edit:  Since this video was shot, we have seen the Hangover, as mentioned in this video here.

Joe Fresh: Persian Blue

I have to be a little Canadian and show you a Joe Fresh.  If I didn't, I'd be excommunicated.

And of course it's a blue.

I realize that all of my colours have been blue or green...and I swear I have other colours.  I don't know why they turned out this way, they just did.

It's a little less dusty in real life, but you get the idea
No base/top coat because I was lazy

I actually like these polishes!  They're kind of thick, but that to me says one-coater!  Well, not quite, but one and a half will completely opaque-ify your nail.  Not to mention it's a gorgeous colour.  I want jeans in this colour.  Flared jeans.  That's right.  Flared.

I'm a child of the 90s.

Review: NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil in Milk and Black Bean

Probably two of the most overused items in the beauty blogosphere, but I only recently started playing with them.

I'm using Milk mostly as a base/highlight, and Black Bean on my upper lashline for a smudgy/smoky effect.  On Tod these crease really, really quickly.  Most creamy products crease on her, so it's partly the way her eyelids fold, but I do think the creaminess of the product has something to do with it.  These don't "dry" exactly - you kind of blend them out until they become a thin wash of colour.  I wouldn't ever use these just as eyeshadow since I don't ever wear just black or white eyeshadow across my lid, but they're a convenient way to pump up colours or duochromes.

So I tested three things for you over the shadesticks - from top to bottom:  a pink eyeshadow from the BH Cosmetics 120 1st edition palette (all swatches here); a mineral eyeshadow from the Bella Pierre 9 Stack (all swatches here); and a MAC Pigment (the name's rubbed off and I can't tell which one it is, sorry!)

They're not bad!  Black Bean gives the pigment more depth and smokes out the eyeshadows, while Milk makes the colour more true to pan.  All in all, not bad for $6!

PS:  be careful with these - I closed Milk a little too enthusiastically and the cap split with little to no fight.  I can't even look at it anymore.

OOTD: I hate this word.

I get it, it's the opposite of mini, but no one thinks that.  People hear maxi and they think feminine toiletries.

Also, I hate that this is a trend.  I've always loved long skirts.  They made me look tall.  You know, because I'm not already tall.  Anyway, they were extremely popular right around 2004 and I lived in them for a couple summers, until everyone decided to start showing their legs off.  This meant two things - wearing a long skirt made you look dated/like you grew up on a prairie; and that I had to start waxing my legs more regularly.  Dammit.

I planned to go to yoga today, but I hurt myself while demonstrating to my brother one of the poses.

Funny story about this tee - it used to be a men's large (I think), but I took it up as a DIY fitting project with my cousin's daughter.  It was extremely poorly done, but we still love it.

Better Late than Tomorrow: Quick Tip/Update

Hey lovelies!  Pardon the uber-late short post, but it's been a long day.  I had a midterm and Tod graduated from undergrad!  I tried filming/uploading this video in the morning but the audio got all out of sync, so here I am, filming it alone.  Here you are, and I'm already preparing a real post for tomorrow.  See you then!

China Glaze: Celtic Sun or...

I'm not sure what this colour is.  The label says Celtic Sun, but when I google photos of it...I get this:

China Glaze Nail Lacquer Celtic Sun #1015/80845

Which so doesn't look like this:

All I know is that I was perusing my collection for another favourite nail colour to show you guys, and I saw this little guy and went: "....Where'd you come from?"

You know what's scary?  I remember having a neon yellow (which is MISSING) that looks like Celtic Sun in the above photo ...is this the weirdest colour morph you've ever seen? Is that possible??  I need answers.

Summer Make Up...Partie Deux!

Remember this post?  Well to help you amp it up for the evening, here's a guide to your office bathroom primping routine.  The best part? You only need three products!

Quick Tip: Skin Gradient? Ew.

So I have a million bottles of incorrectly coloured foundation.  Most of the time I've been deceived by the inaccurate store lighting and I can't/am too lazy to take the bottles back.  So what to do?

I can't avoid getting darker. Even with SPF 60 I get a little colour, which I'm actually fine with, I just wish it wouldn't just be on my upper body.  I'm too lazy to go get my legs sprayed to match my face, so when it starts getting really awkward-looking...I do the following:

Laura Mercier, Let's Get Naked

So I think I'm officially going to kick off a bunch of Naked tutorials.  Why is it official?  You see, dear reader - it's going to get its own tag.  That's right.  Its own TAG.

So I finally trusted myself enough to step into Sephora during this whole PXP thing, and I came across Laura Mercier's new Riviera Eyeshdaow palette.  I've only just started using some of her products (Silk Creme Foundation and Long Lash Mascara) and I have yet to be disappointed, but something was eerily familiar about these colours.

Oh hey, they're all in my Naked palette!

But...but I still want this one...

Eye Colour Palette - Riviera

STOP! IT'S THE PROJECT TEN PAN POLICE!

So here I am, trying to convince myself I don't need both.  Here's my attempt.

How about a quickie?

I don't consider it a booty call until after 11 pm.  Just putting it out there.

And I may just bring to your attention that it is currently 10:47, so there.

Tod and I filmed this today while we were at my family's for the Dragon Boat Festival (that came out more Asian than I intended), so pardon the excessive background noise!

We look kind of bemused in this still.  Filmed on my phone, so pardon the shakiness!

Products used:
Body Brush
Neutrogena Body Oil

OPI: At Your Quebec and Call

There may or may not be a story here.

I don't get my nails painted the same colour.  The manicurist always gives me a weird look, but whatever.  I get to try more colours this way!

A little over two years ago, I got two colours on my feet.  One of them was OPI's Blue My Mind (coming up in a few posts!) and the other...At Your Quebec and Call.

I didn't know what I'd gotten myself into.

It helps that olive is one of my favourite colours, but nevertheless, I looked down at my freshly polished feet and gasped.

It is the most beautiful combination of olive, gold and glowiness.

See for yourself!
I'm not sure why my skin is so pink in these photos!
Of course, I run to my closest Trade Secrets to find that it's not there.  Alrighty.  Next!  Two kilometres and three stores later, still no AYQC.  What??  I go home to my ever-faithful Google search engine and it informs me (almost hesitantly, the way it took the page to load) that AYQC was, in fact, a limited edition colour from the 2004 Canadiana collection.

I nearly cried.  I couldn't even find it on eBay.

Fast forward to September 2009 - Tod and I are doing some outlet shopping and we come across a beauty supply outlet.  Not even a major chain, it was just a family-run store.  I'm perusing the racks and I turn one to find not one, not two but EIGHT bottles of this golden olive bliss.  I nearly died.  And promptly purchased six.  I would have gotten them all, but Tod restrained me like a German Shepherd puppy after a smaller dog.

I gave one to Alexander, one to Tod and I haven't even worked my way through one yet but the remaining bottles are my most prized possessions.  As in, if my studio were to catch fire and I only have time to put on my shoes...I'm grabbing the remaining three bottles.  And my dad, because it's his birthday today.

Summer Day Look

So I don't like sweating.  I just don't.  I'm not usually a sweaty person (tod would like me to point out that she overheats rather easily), but when that Torontonian heat wave hits us, look out.

Here's an every day summer look - I chose to use creams instead of powders because I hate the way powder clumps up on my face once I sweat into it.  This falls somewhere between a foundation routine and a make up look - a no make up make up look!

Technical stuff:  I'm not so sure about this speeding up thing, but I don't like the idea of just not showing you what I'm doing...what do we think?  Any other comments/concerns/etc would also be appreciated!

Edit: I posted the wrong video - here's the complete version! It includes eyes and lips.

Enjoy!
